Racine Raiders 7, Upstate (NY) Predators 6
The Racine Raiders coasted through the regular season, going 9-0. Along the way, head coach Wilbert Kennedy picked up his 100th win as head coach.
The Raiders were schedule to host the Knoxville (TN) Grizzlies in the first round of the Gridiron Developmental Football League (GDFL) playoffs. Late the night before the scheduled game, the Grizzlies notified the Raiders that they wouldn't make the trip giving Racine a 2-0 forfeit win.
The Raiders hosted the Tri-City (TN) Outlaws in the Xtreme Conference championship game. The Raiders handled the Outlaws, 32-0, to advance to Gridiron Bowl XV, the GDFL national championship game.
At the end of the 2023 season, the Raiders bid to host the GDFL championship game in 2024. The GDFL selected Racine as the hosts for 2024 in a decision announced late in 2023.
This meant the Raiders were playing on their home turf in Gridiron Bowl XV against the Upstate (NY) Predators from Rochester, New York. Upstate had beaten the Syracuse (NY) Strong to advance to the championship.
After a three-and-out on their second drive of the game, the Predators punted the ball. Raiders returned Joe Garcia broke the return for a 53-yard touchdown to give Racine a 7-0 lead midway through the first quarter.
On the next drive, the Predators decided to go for it on fourth down at their own 33-yard line. They failed to convert, giving Racine the ball deep in their territory. The Raiders would miss a short field goal off the foot of Alex Gonzalez, maintaining a 7-0 lead.
The game was a defensive battle. The Raiders offense had trouble moving the football at all against the Predators defense. The Predators offense was able to move the ball between the 30-yard lines but could get any deeper into Raiders territory for much of the game.
The Predators would methodically put together a 17-play, 75-yard drive that took nearly nine minutes to pull within one point. Their kicker had broken his leg in the conference championship game so they decided to go for the two-point conversion. The Raiders were able to get the stop though the touchdown ended a streak where the Raiders defense hadn't allowed a touchdown in 30 quarters.
The Raiders defense would get a final hold with a few minutes to play when Jake Mittelstaedt and Niko Lemke sacked Billy Joiner, giving the ball back to Racine and the offense would manage to run out the clock giving the Raiders their 11th national championship.
