The flags that fly boldly in the northeast corner of Historic Horlick Field, the ones that thousands of fans file past each week, are more than just pretty decorations used to doll up the stadium. Indeed, they are testaments to former Raiders players who have had their numbers retired after making their marks with Racine’s minor league football team.
The flags represent years of black and blue play and serve as a weekly reminder of some of those players who helped make the Raiders organization what it is today, the most respected and renowned minor league football organization in the country and maybe the world. There are also two non-players that have flags flying over Historic Horlick Field. Joe Mooney was instrumental in the Raiders comeback from financial difficulties and was the general manager for many of the national championship teams. Gary Suhr will always be the “Voice of the Raiders.” Suhr broadcast games for the team for nearly 50 seasons before retiring following the 2001 season.
